Stephen R. Swisher, 65, of Bluffton, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Swisher was born in Bluffton on April 2, 1945, to Joseph B. and Thelma (Reiff) Rector. He married Hellen "Jeane" Heller in Decatur on Nov. 7, 1964; she survives. A 1963 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mr. Swisher graduated from Purdue University with a masters degree in forestry management. He worked as a carpenter for Cline Lumber Company in Bluffton for 35 years, retiring in 2003. He also worked as a self-employed carpenter, making cabinets. He enjoyed fishing, nature and the outdoors, and caring for his wife, Jeane. Surviving relatives include two sons, Doug (Julie) Swisher of Decatur and Rob Swisher of Bluffton; and four grandchildren, Christopher Swisher, Kyle Swisher, Heather Swisher and Zachary Swisher. Mr. Swisher was also preceded in death by one sister, Virginia McKinley. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. Friday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home with Tony Garton officiating. Burial is at Elm Grove cemetery at a later date. Preferred memorials are to the Cure P.S.P.
