Richard E. Garrett, 86, of Chicago and formerly of Bluffton, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, at his residence. Mr. Garrett was born in Bluffton on Dec. 18, 1925, to Alonzo and Frances(Shafer) Garrett. A 1943 graduate of Bluffton High School, he also graduated from the Indiana University School of Business in 1948. He worked as a salesman for Polaroid and Marshall Fields. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve, and a member of American Legion Post 111. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Bluffton. Surviving relatives include a brother, Thomas (Joyce) Garrett of Bluffton; and a sister-in-law, Joan Garrett of Bluffton. Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by three brothers, G. William Garrett, Robert S. Garrett and Frank P. Garrett; and three sisters, Betsy A Noe, Betty Lou Garrett and Suzanne E. Commers. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb, 9, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home with Pastor Bud Abrams officiating. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Shriners Hospital for Children, in care of the funeral home.
