Obituary

Rebecca J. Powell, age 87, formally of Bluffton, passed away on April 8, 2011 in Rochester, Minnesota. She was born on October 16, 1923 to Edward S. and Theresa (Irey) Hiatt in Bluffton, Indiana. Rebecca graduated from Bluffton High School in 1941 and attended Indiana University in Bloomington. In January 1944, Rebecca enlisted in the Marine Corps Women's Reserve. She married Orlean J. Durdahl in Parris Island, South Carolina while both were serving in the Marines. After they were discharged the couple moved to the White Rock, Minnesota area and farmed until Orlean passed away in 1964. Rebecca married Herschel G. Powell of Bluffton in October, 1968. Herschel preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived by two sons and three daughters: John (Judy) Durdahl of Rochester, MN, Theresa Steil of Rochester, MN, Joseph (Pam) Durdahl of Bluffton, IN, Patricia (Richard) Morrisey of White Rock, MN, and Bonnie (Gary) Otte of White Rock, MN. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Dr. William R. (Mary) Hiatt of Germantown, WI, and a sister-in-law, Jane (Tom) Hiatt of Rochester, MN. Preceding her in death were two brothers, Edward Hiatt and Thomas Hiatt, and a sister, June (Lloyd Keisler). A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 10:00 A.M., at the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. The American Legion Post 111 of Bluffton in conjunction with the United State Marine Corps Honor Guard will assist with military graveside rites. Arrangements are in care of Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton.
