Raymond Frank Gobernatz,87 years old of Clarksville, TN passed away at 8:10 am Saturday Jan 7 2012. He was born on June 3, 1924 in Holdingford, MN to Joseph and Hildegard (Meier)Gobernatz. Raymond was born and raised in Holdingford, Minnesota on June 3, 1924. He was baptized on June 5, 1924 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Holdingford. He attended Holdingford High School and played on the high school football team. After graduating from Holdingford High School in May 1942, Raymond enlisted and served in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Jolly Rogers 90th Bomb Group (The Best Damn Bomb Squad in the World) from 1942 to 1945. During this time he served in New Guinea and Goose Bay Labrador as a left hand gunner in B24 Liberators. He took a short period of time off from his military career to attend Denver University in Denver, Colorado, to study aircraft engine maintenance. Raymond then re-enlisted in the military serving for the United States Air Force. There he served in the Korean War and 4 tours in the Vietnam Conflict. His duties included supervision of the munitions maintenance squadron (MMS). In 1976 Raymond retired from the USAF with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He retired to Atwater, California, where he resided for 32 years. In September 2008 at the age of 84 he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee. Until his death, he still participated in the Jolly Rogers 90th Bomb Group reunions. Raymond is survived by one son, Raymond (Susan) Gobernatz Jr. of Clarksville, TN and 4 daughters: Theresa Harris of Bluffton, IN; Kathy (Rocky) Mahon of Clarksville, TN; Michelle (Tom) Michael of Pennville, IN; Linda (Gary) Glenn of Bluffton, IN. He is also survived by a sister Phyllis (Ervin) Welter of Moses Lake, WA; an aunt, Dorothy Meier of Holdingford MN; 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Raymond is predeceased by parents Joseph and Hildegard (Meier) Gobernatz; a brother Howard Gobernatz; and a grandson Rocky L. Mahon. As he always said, "Have a good day!
