Phyllis I. Gonzalez, 69, a lifelong resident of Poneto, passed away at 6:10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at the Woodcrest Retirement Community in Decatur. She attended Liberty Center Elementary School and Liberty Center High School. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of American Legion Post 111's Women's Auxiliary. She loved being with her grandchildren and she loved to read. She was born June 13, 1942, in Bluffton, to Doug Ginger and Anna Lee McDonald Lafferty. Her mother survives in Decatur. She married Mike B. Gonzalez Aug. 13, 1961, in Poneto; her husband died May 18, 2003. Survivors include a daughter, Elveda "Vera" Ann (Glen) Norman of Rockford; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Beverly (David) Nagy of Union, Mich., Sharon (Joe) Gonzalez of Decatur, Dena Shaffer of Butler, and Debra (Ronald) Wiegmann of Decatur; and two stepsisters, Linda Anderson of Fort Wayne and Beth Ann (Tom) Reinhart of Decatur. A brother, Billy W. Ginger, preceded her in death Jan. 27, 2011. Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel with Father Francis Chukwuma officiating. Burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Woodcrest Retirement Community in Decatur.
