Luster H. Heyerly, 92, of Bluffton, died at 3:07 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at Christian Care Retirement Community. He was born in Wells County on Oct. 3, 1919, to Albert and Aldine (Aschliman) Heyerly. He married Martha Neuenschwander in Bluffton on Feb. 14, 1943; she survives. Along with his brothers, Ray and Herman, Luster was the owner of Heyerly's Bakery and Heyerly's Market. They started the bakery in 1931, and the bread route in 1936, running it until 1959. In 1959, the brothers bought the Ratliff Grocery from Ott Ratliff. Luster retired in 2005. Together, the bakery, bread route and grocery played an important part of the Bluffton business community for almost 75 years. The Heyerlys were great supporters of the 4-H auction, having bought the Grand Champion Steer for 25 years, from 1962 to 1986. Luster also served on the board of directors of the Farmers and Merchants Bank. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Other surviving relatives include one son, Herbert (Janet) Heyerly of Bluffton; one daughter, Sue (John) Lantz of Blufftton; one brother, Simon "Pete" (Delores) Heyerly of Bluffton; three sisters, Rosella Heyerly, Dula Heyerly and Jeanette Tonner, all of Bluffton; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Luster was also preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Herman, Clifford an Homer Heyerly; and four sisters, Ada Gerber, Alice Gerber, Bernice Maller and Gladys Gerber. Calling hours will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Apostolic Christian Church East. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the church with Steve Frauhiger and John Reinhard officiating. Burial is at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Christian Care Retirement Community.
