Obituary

Louis Francis Bradley "Lou," 92, of Bluffton, passed away, surrounded by family, early Tuesday morning, September 1, 2015 at River Terrace Estates. He was born into an Irish Catholic family to Irene and Frank Bradley on May 8, 1923 in Montgomery, Indiana, Daviess County. He had four brothers and two sisters. Lou worked on the family farm and inherited his strong work ethic from his father. After graduating from Barr High School in 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 during WWII where he served in the Thirteenth Port of the Transportation Corp., otherwise known as the "Black Cats." He trained in New York and served in England, Belgium and France. The war ended before he was shipped to the Pacific. He earned an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1946. Lou's aptitude for science was recognized early on by his teachers. Their encouragement led him to pursue his path of becoming a physician. After his discharge from the army, he majored in Chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington. Lou attended medical school at Indiana University (IU), Indianapolis, on the GI bill. He met his future wife, Ruth, at the medical center while she was completing her dietetic internship. They married in 1955 in Indianapolis. In 1958, Lou and Ruth moved to Chicago where he completed his medical residency at Cook County Hospital. The couple moved to Bluffton in 1959 where they raised their seven children and Lou practiced internal medicine at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic. Lou was dedicated to his profession and he was known for routinely making house calls. Later in his career, he maintained a private practice and then worked as a physician for the Veteran's Administration. He retired from the practice of medicine in 1995. Lou was a lifelong devout Catholic. He was devoted to his loving wife. He and Ruth were long-time parishioners at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed swimming, tennis and photography. He loved polkas and waltzes. He had a keen interest in politics and the stock market. He and his wife contributed generously to charitable causes. His spirit is carried on in five daughters, Carol Bradley (Teresa Favuzzi) of Sacramento, CA; Charlotte Abel (Peter) of Castleton, VA; Jean Bradley of Chicago, IL; Alice Bradley-Harmon (Daniel) of Richardson, TX; and Emily Bradley (Hans Detlefsen) of Chicago, IL; one son, Donald Bradley (Mimi) of Hinsdale, IL; five grandchildren, Evan Christian Bradley Harmon, Alec Mikeal Bradley Harmon, Cullen McGinnis Bradley, Leah Adeline Bradley, and Eleanor B Detlefsen; and one sister, Margaret Fleming, of Booneville, IN.
