Loretta K. Smith, 63, of Bluffton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
She was born Aug. 11, 1953, in Bluffton to Millard Aschliman and Alice Fiechter Aschliman. She married David J. Smith in Bluffton Aug. 19, 1973; he survives. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years, including 18 years as postmaster in Craigville. She was a 1971 Adams Central graduate and attended Life Community Church.
Loretta spent her life serving others. She was a devoted wife, selfless mother, fun-loving grandmother, caring sister and faithful friend. She served the Lord in various ways at the church she attended. She also spent countless hours in her kitchen preparing meals for others. Loretta's service extended to four continents where she gave of herself tirelessly. Loretta loved trips to Canada, motorcycle adventures with her husband, and games around her table with family and friends.
Loretta grew up with a heritage of faith and has lived it out. Her grandchildren will always remember her saying, "The best is yet to come," even through her illness. Her legacy of faith and service will affect her family, friends and community for generations.
Survivors include sons, Austin (Rachel) Smith of Decatur, Jason (JulieAnn) Smith of Boswell, Pa., and Joshua (Tricia) Smith of Fort Wayne; daughters, Lisa (Jonathan) Ringger of Southeast Asia, and Lana (Tim) Shoaf of Bluffton; a brother, Derryl (Peggy) Aschliman of Decatur; sisters, Diane (Von) Heyerly of Bluffton, Laura (Mark) Grime of Fort Wayne, and LouAnn (Keith) Kaehr of Decatur; and 18 grandchildren.
A service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Life Community Church with Kent Ringger and John Reinhard officiating. Calling hours are from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Goodwin-Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery.
