Lela K. Claghorn Herndon, 86, formally of rural Bluffton, passed away at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at River Terrace Estates Bluffton. She was born to Jay Minger and Mary E. Mallonee in Bluffton May 1, 1927. She married Walter E. Claghorn Jr. Nov. 17, 1946, in Bluffton; he preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1981. She married James K. Herndon July 12, 1997, in Bluffton; he preceded her in death Sept. 27, 2012. Lela worked at K-Mart for 14 years and was a housewife. She was a member of Bethel Church and the Poplar Grove Home Extension Club. Survivors include four sons, Alan K. (Karey) Claghorn of Milo, Iowa, Ted M. (JoAnn) Claghorn of Bluffton, G. Brian Claghorn of Indianapolis, and Bradley W. Claghorn Sr. of Bellbrook, Ohio; a daughter, Jean Ann (Jon) Shepherd of Wasilla, Alaska; a daughter-in-law, Sandra S. Claghorn of Chesterfield; stepchildren, Daniel (Susan) Herndon of Roanoke and Leslie K. (Mary) Herndon of Ossian; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, John J. Claghorn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Goodwin-Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ron Garner officiating. Calling hours are from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at the Memorial Chapel, and one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery in Bluffton.
