Joseph E. Kipfer, 90, Bluffton, passed away at 4:40 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Christian Care Retirement Community. Born on Feb. 5, 1923, in Adams County to Aaron and Mary (Steffen) Kipfer, he married Marie E. Gerber Jan. 19, 1947, in Bluffton; she died Jan. 31, 2004. Mr. Kipfer served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He worked at Thoma Furniture Store, Central Soya in Decatur and was co-owner of Marie's Gifts in Bluffton with his wife. A member of the Apostolic Christian Church, he graduated in 1942 from Kirkland High School, where he was a member of the Kangaroos basketball team. He enjoyed getting together with his family and singing. He also enjoyed gospel music, especially listening to the local quartet, Psalm 100, and also had a love for cats. Joe was very giving of himself and his resources, and he will also be remembered for he and his wife's love of flowers. He is survived by a brother and a sister, Aaron Kipfer Jr. and Eunice Steffen, both of Bluffton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Schladenhauffen and Mahilda Kipfer; two nieces; and two nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Bluffton North Apostolic Church. Calling hours are Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Goodwin-Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel, and Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
