John L. Sitton, 83, of Ossian, died at 6:42 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Ossian Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Sitton had worked for General Electric for 25 years before retiring in 1990. He was a member of American Legion Post 111 in Bluffton. He was a 50-year member of Bluffton Masonic Lodge 145, F. & A.M., and was also a member of the Valley of Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine. He was also an avid dog lover. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was born May 24, 1931, at Chesnee, S.C., to John Lester Sitton and Nellie Stepp Sitton. He married Peggy Martin April 8, 1953, at Chesnee, S.C.; his wife survives. Also surviving are a son, David Lee (Karen) Sitton of The Colony, Texas; a grandson, Jonathan "J.D." (Alicia) Sitton of Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Amanda L. Sitton of The Colony, Texas; and a brother, Marvin B. (Ruth) Sitton of Tampa, Fla. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Hamrick and Alzie Hamrick, and three sisters, Madeline Johnson, Juanita Smith, and Notivene Smith. Calling will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 27, at the Goodwin-Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel. There will be additional calling at the chapel from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Bluffton, with graveside services conducted by members of Bluffton American Legion Post 111 and by members of the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Preferred memorials are to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
