James J. Smith, 85, of Bluffton, died at 2:55 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at his son's residence in Bluffton. Mr. Smith was born in Richlands, Va., on Jan. 14, 1926. He married Donna Hounshell on June 6, 1951; she preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 1997. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army, and also worked at General Motors for 33 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post and Masonic Lodge. Surviving relatives include one son, Bryan (Tamara) Smith of Bluffton; a daughter Beverly (Ron) Ainsworth of Bluffton; and a Sister Mamie Wilson of Grafton, Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by one daughter Tammie Smith; one brother, Jack Smith; and two sisters, Ethel Smith and Lucille Smith. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 2, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. A private graveside service will be held at the Gardens of Memory in Marion with Dr. Bryson E. Bell officiating. Preferred memorials are to the First Reformed Church of Bluffton or Family Hospice and Palliative Care.
