Obituary

Jack R. Zimmerman, 88, of Indianapolis, passed away Sunday morning, July 4, 2021, at Arlington Place Health Campus in Indianapolis.

Jack was born in Wolcottville on Aug. 8, 1932, to Alden and Dorothy (Yeager) Zimmerman.  He graduated from Wolcottville High School and later attended Indiana University.  In 1951, while working at Methodist Hospital in Fort Wayne as a lab assistant, Jack met Carolyn S. Maddux while Carolyn was training to be a nurse.  Jack and Carolyn were later married in Wolcottville in 1953.  Carolyn preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 2021.

Jack served in the United States Air Force and then the Army for a total of 20 years, before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer.  While in the Army, Jack received a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile force.  During his time in the service, Jack and Carolyn lived in various locations in the United States as well as England.  They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as they raised their three children, Kathleen, David, and Kristine.  Of all the many places they lived, he most enjoyed England and Washington DC.

After retiring from the Army in 1972, Jack continued his career in the Civil Service, first being posted in Indianapolis and later in Washington DC.  He and Carolyn loved Washington DC and would spend the weekends traveling throughout the DC area.  It was during this time they both became interested in presidential birth places, libraries, and historical lighthouses.  At the time of his retirement from Civil Service, Jack received the Superior Civilian Service Award for his 42 years of government service.  He even received a flag that was flown above the United States Capitol, in honor of his service.

After Jack and Carolyn retired from working, they returned to Indianapolis to be close to their family, all while continuing to travel the world.  Jack was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Military Officers Association.

Survivors include a son, David Zimmerman of Chattanooga, TN; two daughters, Kathleen (Michael) Himes and Kristine (Michael) Cassidy, both of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Aside from his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by a brother, Jerold Zimmerman.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at Goodwin – Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel in Bluffton, with visitation from 11:00 AM until service time.  Dr. Bryson "Gene" Bell will officiate.  Burial will be at Six Mile Cemetery in Bluffton with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 111 and the United States Army Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
