Jack Z. Swyers, 98, of Bluffton, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at River Terrace Estates. He was born May 24, 1916, in Lewistown, Pa., to Blanchard and Zella M. Zerbe Swyers. He married Violet Marle Wilson Aug. 11, 1940, in Hagerstown, Md.; she preceded him in death Nov. 20, 2004. Jack is a 1935 graduate of Lewistown High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a pharmacist mate, third class, in Bainbridge, Md. After high school, he graduated from Lewistown Business School. He was the assistant manager for the G.C. Murphy Co. in Bluffton from 1957 to 1959, retiring from that company in 1981. He was an avid horseshoe player and was responsible for establishing horseshoe courts in several communities, wherever his family had been residing at the time. In 1981, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Horseshoe Hall of Fame. Survivors include two daughters, Zella (David) Butler of Bluffton and Debbie (Randy) Clifton of Middletown, Ohio; six grandchildren, David (Carol) Butler of Bluffton, Stephen (Michele) Butler of Ossian, Mark (Stacy) Butler of Fort Wayne, Ann (Rob) Barker of Wynona Lake, Kelly (Jim) Malony of Beloit, Wis., and Amy (Joe) Valdez of Kansas City, Kansas; and 12 great-grandchildren, Adam and Robin Butler, Evan, Kristen and Olivia Butler, Collin Crandal, Jacob and Sarah Barker, and Sean, Andrew, Joshua and Brendan Malony. He is also survived by four stepgrandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren, all of Middletown, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Cheadle; two sisters, Martha Biglow and Janet McFarland; and a granddaughter, Jaqueline Marie Cheadle. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, Pa. Calling hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at Goodwin-Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel in Bluffton, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home. Burial will be at St. Marks Cemetery in Lewistown. Memorials may be made to donor's choice.
