Howard E. Schwartz, 84, of Bluffton, died at 1:54 a.m. Sunday, July 18, 2010, at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center. Mr. Schwartz worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1965 to 1987, serving as postmaster in Craigville and Ossian. He had also been employed at Gerber Furniture and Dunbar Furniture. Worked part-time for nine years at Umber's Ace Hardware. He was an Army veteran, serving in 1945 and 1946. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. He was a 1948 graduate of Monroe High School. Mr. Schwartz was born May 14, 1926, in Adams County, to Joel M. Schwartz and Sarah Neussbaum Schwartz. He married Beulah M. Bertsch Dec. 12, 1948, in Bluffton; his wife survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sharon (Gary) Merrittof Craigville; two sons, Gary (Barb) Schwartz of Bluffton and Dale (Joni) Schwartz of Decatur; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Lester (Sally) Schwartz of Berne; and two sisters, Mildred Schladenhauffen of Bluffton and Luella (Vernon) Geisel of Keystone. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cheryl Schwartz, in 1950; and a brother, Kenneth Schwartz, on Feb. 4, 2010. Calling will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. There will be additional calling from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Apostolic Christian Church East. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Apostolic Christian Church East with ministers of the church officiating. Burial will be at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Christian Care Retirement Community.
