Harry J. Longenberger, 84, of Monroe, passed away following a battle with cancer at 2:53 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at his residence at the Christian Care Retirement Community. Mr. Longenberger was employed at Gerber Furniture for 21 years before purchasing the business with his brother Roger in 1969. He remained a co-owner of Gerber Furniture for the next 24 years, retiring in 1993. He was a 1946 graduate of Kirkland High School, where he was a member of the basketball team. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. He enjoyed spending time at his lake cottage, where he enjoyed fishing and boating. He most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He loved people and enjoyed birds, particularly bluebirds. Mr. Longenberger was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Adams County, to Ernest E. Longenberger and Pearl M. Frauhiger Longenberger. He married Devona L. Gerber May 2, 1948, in Adams County; his wife survives. Also surviving are two sons, Terry (Twila) Longenberger and Steve (Kathy) Longenberger, both of Bluffton; six grandchildren, Jonathon Longenberger, Shawn Longenberger, Brandon Longenberger, Bryce Longenberger, Jessie Longenberger, and Jamie Longenberger; and three brothers, William (Betty) Longenberger, Roger (Marilyn) Longenberger, and Richard (Joyce) Longenberger, all of Bluffton. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucille Bucher, Helen Redding, and Betty Bertsch; three brothers-in-law, Robert Bucher, Marvin Redding, and Arthur Bertsch; and a sister-in-law, Judy Longenberger. Calling will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. There will be additional calling from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Apostolic Christian Church East. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with Mark Gerber and Ron Kipfer officiating. Burial will be at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Christian Care Retirement Community.
