Gwendolyn B. "Gwen" Payne, 89, of Bluffton, died at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Markle Health and Rehabilitation. She was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Fremont, Ohio, to Herbert M. Sommers and Monna R. (Rummell) Sommers. She married James Russell Payne Feb. 20, 1940, in Wauseon, Ohio; he preceded her in death Jan., 30, 1982. Mrs. Payne was a homemaker and a member of the First Reformed Church in Bluffton. She was a member of the Lancaster Neighbors for 50 years, the Women's Circle, JI0 Fellowship and the Wells County Mental Health Association. Surviving relatives include two sons, Richard H. (Sharon) Payne of Bluffton and G. Ronald (JoAnn) Payne of Ossian; one daughter, Carol M. (Ray) Fiechter of Noblesville; one son-in-law, William "Bill" Hartman of Bluffton; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Payne was also preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia Hartman; and one great-grandson, Gavin Beers. She was the last of her family. Private family services were held Saturday, Sept. 8, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Bluffton. The Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
