G. William "Bill" Garrett, 90, Bluffton, died at 8:25 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at River Terrace Estates. Mr. Garrett was a 1937 graduate of Bluffton High School and was a member of the first kindergarten class in Bluffton in 1924. He was the retired owner of Garrett's service station, starting business in 1952. He worked with Mobil, Texaco, and Marathon. He also refereed many high school basketball and football game, belonging to the officials' association. He was born May 8, 1919, in Huntington County, to Alonzo B. Garrett and Frances E. Shaffer Garrett. He married Joan Sawyer June 15, 1940, in Vera Cruz; his wife survives. Also surviving are a son, Jerry (Darlene) Garrett of Bluffton; a daughter, Sally (Floyd) Lobsiger of Bluffton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard "Dick" Garrett of Chicago and Thomas (Joyce) Garrett of Bluffton; and a sister, Suzanne Commers of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betsy N. Noe and Betty Lou Garrett, and two brothers, Frank Garrett and Robert Garrett. Calling will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Dr. Bryson G. Bell officiating. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the First Reformed Church.
