Eugene Max Mendenhall, 95, Bluffton, passed away at 6:22 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, at his residence.

Born Nov. 11, 1921, in Wells County to Charles Robert and Addie Jarrett Mendenhall, he married Joan Reiff Sept. 5, 1953, in Huntington; she survives.

He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired in 1983 from Indiana Bell Company after serving 35 1/2 years. He was a member of First Church of Christ in Bluffton and also the American Legion Post 111 for more than 70 years. He enjoyed coon hunting and fishing and, above all, loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Nora (Dan) Lavine of Bluffton and Laura (Glen) Bollinger of Pennville; a son, Dr. Ron Mendenhall, DDS of Idaho; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dorsey and Joseph Mendenhall.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Goodwin-Cale and Harnish Memorial Chapel with Pastor Dennis Wood officiating. Calling hours there are Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Honor Guard and American Legion Post 111 of Bluffton.
