Douglas B. Blessing, 88, of Bluffton, died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday Jan. 9, 2011, at Markle Health and Rehabilitation. Mr. Blessing was a dairy farmer. He owned the former American Motors dealership in Bluffton and was a welder for the Ray Bolinger Welding Shop. He was a 1940 graduate of Rockcreek High School and a member of the Uniondale United Methodist Church. Mr. Blessing was an avid sports fan. He loved his family, along with attending all of their activities. He was also active in his church, where he held various positions and sang in the choir. He was born July 17, 1922, in Fort Wayne, to Raymond Blessing and Ona Culver Blessing. He married Mary Etta McElhaney Aug. 22, 1943, in Wells County; his wife survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Donna (Michael) Geisman and Elaine (Larry) McAfee, both of Bluffton; a grandson, Brent (Paula) McAfee; four granddaughters, Lora (Dave) DeVoe, Beth (Terry) Herrell, Doris (Trent) Prough, and Amy (Jason) Horne; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Beverly (Jean) Blessing of Markle. He is also survived by a special part of his family, George (Barbara) Keplinger of Markle. A sister, Jeanette Larmore, preceded him in death. Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Uniondale United Methodist Church. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Karen Ottjes officiating. Burial will be at the Horeb Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Elevator Fund of the Uniondale United Methodist Church.
