Dorothy E. Gerwig, 87, of Bluffton, died at 3:15 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Gerwig was born in Bluffton on Sept. 14, 1921 to Frank and Jessie R. (Carlson) Matson. She married Paul E. Gerwig in Bluffton on July 27, 1945; he preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2009. A 1939 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mrs. Gerwig was a housewife who also served as Jail Matron at the Wells County jail for 13 years. She also worked at General Electric. She was a member of the Mulberry Street Weslyan Church. Surviving relatives include one son, Mike (Susan) Gerwig of Poneto; one daughter, Gloria (Thomas) Mayne of Bluffton; 14 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Gerwig was also preceded in death by four sisters, Emma Marguerite Cash, Eva Shepard, Audrey Matson and Mary Smith. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton with the Rev. Donald Hosier officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial is at Six Mile Cemetery, in Bluffton. Preferred memorials are to the Family Hospice and Palliative Care or the church.
