Carroll J. Gerber, 79, of Bluffton, passed away at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Christian Care Retirement Community in Bluffton. Born on July 10, 1934 in Adams County to Elmer and Emma (Sinn) Gerber, he married Louise Bertsch on March 7, 1954 in the Apostolic Christian Church in Wells County; they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March, 2014. He was the owner of the Gerber Variety & Sporting Goods store and served his Lord as a minister of the Apostolic Christian Church. Carroll's desire in life was to serve God by serving others so that more people would come to love and follow Jesus Christ. He attended the Kirkland School in Adams County. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic in the Lebanese Crisis, also serving in Ft. Riley, Kan. Survivors include his wife of Bluffton; two daughters, Lori (Mark) Steffen of Bluffton and Gala Gerber of Jasper Ga.; two sons, Blake (Fawn) Gerber and Brent (Ann) Gerber, both of Bluffton; 10 grandchildren, Joshua Gerber, Stephanie Gerber, Lauren Gerber, Taye (Blake) Fiechter, Taryn (Drew) Schumacher, Trayton Gerber, Nicholas Steffen, Bryan (Ashton) Steffen, Javon Steffen, and Takaylah Gerber; two great-grandhcildren, Poppy and Lucette Steffen; four brothers, Donald (Mary) Gerber, Earl (Pat) Gerber, Lester (Rosemary) Gerber, all of Bluffton, and Dale (Carol) Gerber of Ossian; his twin sister Carolyn Roberts of Bluffton; and two other sisters, Pauline Gerber of Fort Wayne and Lois (Harry T.) Gerber of Bluffton; sister-in-law Mary Jo Gerber of Bluffton; brother-in-law John Clough of Penn. He was preceded in death by brothers Paul Gerber and Elmer Gerber, Jr.; and one sister, Kathy Clough. Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church North in Bluffton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Goodwin-Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel, and Sunday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
