Allene E. Pence, 100, of Bluffton, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Meadowvale Health & Rehabilitation Center in Bluffton. Born in Fort Wayne on February 23, 1911, to John E. and Edith (Emrich) Baumgartner, she married Herman E. Pence in Angola on September 3, 1938. Herman preceded her in death on September 29, 1992. Allene was a 1929 graduate of Northside High School and later received a degree in nursing from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1933. She worked many years as a registered nurse, retiring in 1976 as the surgery supervisor from the Wells Community Hospital. She was a member of the Sonlight Wesleyan Church. Survivors include three sons, Robert E. Pence of Fort Wayne, David A. Pence of Bluffton, IN, and John F. Pence of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren, Mathew Pence, Carrie (Jacob) Duke, John (Renee) Pence, Jason (Heidi) Pence, Christa (Martin) Brandenberger, and Cassi (Bryan) McClintock; 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Also surviving is her sister, Jeraldine C. Baumgartner M.D. of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her half-brother, Homer Baumgartner. Visitation will be Monday, July 25, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Goodwin Memorial Chapel, 3220 East State Road 124, Bluffton, IN. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 26, at Goodwin Memorial Chapel, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Rev. Lyle Breeding will be officiating the service. In lieu of floral tributes, the family requests that memorial contributions be given to World Visions or The Gideon's International.
